• Review: Sugar Free Journey

So, a while back I finished reading Sugar Free Journey by Naomi Kingery and, after much delay, I’m finally able sit down at the computer and share a few thoughts about it. Sugar Free Journey is the final installment of The Sugar Free Series, which is a collection of four books focused on the emotional aspects of living with diabetes. In this book, Naomi reflects on her first decade of living with Type 1 Diabetes and shares her experiences in a fun way that most people can understand. Everyone travels.  Short trips, long trips, and somewhere in between.   And with those travels come luggage of all shapes and sizes.  Naomi likens those common experiences to the experiences that come with…

  • Review: Life Is Short, Laundry Is Eternal

Well, I finally completed my reading of the new book Life Is Short, Laundry Is Eternal: Confessions of a Stay-at-Home Dad by Scott Benner, and now it’s my turn to share some thoughts about it. Simply put, I loved it. It’s one of the best books I’ve had the privilege of reading in quite some time. And if you haven’t read it yet, I encourage you to get your hands on a copy of it soon. I couldn’t agree more with the title. Given the hell that I’ve been through with my health the last several years, and having watched April’s mom lose her battle with cancer and now watching my aunt fight hers, I most certainly agree that Life…

  • Review: Diabetes Do’s & How-To’s

So, I’ve just finished reading Riva Greenberg’s new book, Diabetes Do’s & How-To’s, and I would definitely recommend it to those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, as well as to those who have lived with diabetes for a while but have fallen off the management wagon and are struggling to get back on it. In her book, Riva not only lays out what one should do to live healthy with diabetes, but also how to go about it. Drawing from more than 40 years of personal experience living with type 1 diabetes, as well from experts in the diabetes field, Riva touches on a wide range of topics including food and fitness, as well as medical issues and changing…

  • Review: Emotional Eating with Diabetes

When I think about a book on diabetes and emotional eating, I think of something like a college textbook filled with hundreds of pages of psychological mumbo-jumbo and medical terms that I would need a PhD in order to understand. Thankfully, Ginger Vieira‘s new book, Emotional Eating with Diabetes, is nothing of the sort. It’s essentially a 46 page workbook, designed to help you identify the problems that you may have with emotional eating, pinpoint the causes of the problems, and help lay out a plan for addressing those problems and moving on.  The audience?  People living with any type of diabetes. Within the fun, inviting cover you’ll find some of Ginger’s own experiences, as well as the experiences of…

  • A Fitbit Durability Test

This afternoon, while out and about, I discovered that my Fitbit Ultra was missing.  I usually have it clipped to the side of my pants pocket, and when I reached in to grab a pen, it wasn’t there. I posted a FB status update stating as such,  and a fellow Fitbit fan replied that they always “lose” theirs getting in and out of the car.  And then it dawned on me that I heard something hit the ground when I got out of the car as I was returning home from work last night.  It was dark and I couldn’t see anything, so I shrugged it off and went inside.  Was too cold out to worry about it anyway.  And…
