• Giving the gym another shot

Recently I tweeted that I had joined a gym.  And there have been a few tweets since indicating that I was either en route to the gym or had just left.  What that initial tweet should have said, though, was “I just joined a gym, AGAIN!” Since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and congestive heart failure in 2008, I’ve had a couple of gym memberships which I took advantage of for a while then, for one reason or another, had to stop going.  Lack of money for the membership fees, major setbacks with my heart, and total burnout all led to dropped memberships. Over the last year, I’ve been able to increase my level of activity significantly and…

  • Wordless Wednesday: TCOYD in Des Moines

The trip to Des Moines, IA two weekends ago for TCOYD was fantastic.  The conference was great and it provided an opportunity to spend time with dear friends from the DOC.   And I was able to capture bits and pieces on camera.  The pictures include shots of the diabetes guerrilla art banner created for Diabetes Art Day, shots from around town, and a few fun shots with Little G.  Enjoy!

  • It’s OK to Need Help

In previous blog posts and conversations over the last two years, I’ve made no bones about the fact that I’ve battled with bouts of depression and anxiety since I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and type 2 diabetes. The daily routines of medications, blood sugar testing, meal planning, and other related bullshit, combined with the constant worry of trying to figure out how to pay for all of those medications and testing supplies, are simply overwhelming at times. Add to that all of the typical stuff that goes along with every day life, you know… work, bills, chores, relationships, etc… and you’ve got yourself a great big barrel of fun. Then top that off with dealing with a loved…

  • Blunt Lancet Song Lyrics Leaked

Blunt Lancet, the popular 90’s rock group who, according to the higher ups in their organization are working on a new Christmas album, appear to be the latest group to be hit by a leak. BetesLeaks, a website hell bent on making all things Betes available to the world free of charge, has obtained and made public the lyrics to Blunt Lancet’s much anticipated Christmas song, “The Twelve Days of Betes”. MDH News entertainment reporter Little G spoke with Blunt Lancet drummer and representative Kim “Pancreas”, who said the group has mixed feelings about the leak. “We had talked about making the song lyrics available to the public ahead of the album’s release as a way to show our fans…

  • New Opportunities

During the year and a half since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I’ve often said that I see that diagnosis as a blessing in disguise.  If it weren’t for my going to the doctor for diabetes related problems, the congestive heart failure wouldn’t have been found, and I probably wouldn’t be writing this post.  The fact that I am here is a blessing in and of itself, but there have been so many more. My diagnosis lead me to the diabetic online community, and the awesome people, blogs, and other websites that make up the community.  And it lead to the creation of this blog, which has allowed me to share my story with people from all over…
